At their core, horror games turn uncertainty into gameplay. You do not always know what is behind the next door, whether a sound means danger, or whether the path ahead is safe. Every step becomes a small decision, and that constant uncertainty is what allows a simple game environment to become genuinely frightening. Some scary games use simple visual styles rather than realistic graphics. Pixel art, low-poly environments, distorted characters, or deliberately crude animations can still create a strong horror atmosphere. In some cases, the unusual visual style makes the game feel even more unsettling because familiar shapes appear slightly wrong.
